Have you ever felt stuck in your career? Have you ever ask: “why am I here in this job?” , “is this even the right career for me?” , “why do I feel so burned out at work?”
Do you think you’re getting your answers to these questions from the right places? Or, worse, do you even have the time and the effort to answer them at all? You ask these questions towards the weekend, and just before you have the answer, Monday comes too soon, and you have no choice but to work or else you can’t pay the bills.
The story sounds generic but you know for sure that at some point you have had a similar story to tell. The thing with being stuck is that it is almost impossible to “unstuck” yourself on your own.
Whether you are looking for a career, you’re stuck in your current job (in a “plateau”), or you are at your best looking for new opportunities (i.e. “climb the ladder of your career”) – there’s one thing in common, you have a goal and you need to push yourself to reach that goal- fast.
Imagine you are in a quicksand and you need to get out quick (duh). You need to know what you have at your disposal. Are there things in you or around you that can help? How much time do you have? What’s the fastest way to unstuck yourself? All of these can happen in seconds because you’ll be operating mostly on instinct and adrenalin in a life and death situation. However, things might be a little different back in the office. You can’t rely on mere instinct nor do you want to make hasty decisions, specially that your future is involved. But the feeling of being overwhelmed, like in the quicksand, is almost the same.
Enter strengths coaching – where the coach helps you utilise your talents (i.e. strengths) to tackle your goals. Strengths coaches helps you assess your current situation (i.e. problem), what you have at your disposal (your talents), and your urgent time-bound goal. A strengths coach can present all of these in a very thought-provoking yet creative way. It will almost feel like somebody is organising your thoughts for you. Putting random things in their right containers and focusing on the most important task at hand.
The goal is to get you moving. Not just moving, but moving in the direction you want to go. The goals you set, are broken down into smaller and more actionable goals. The coach will be your accountability partner throughout your journey. The focus is to create awareness of your current situation, and your talents, and to instil responsibility in you to achieve your goals.
If you are a person driven to move and grow your career today, then strengths coaching is one of your best tools to accomplish this!
